    With so much to see and do in Newcastle and Gateshead, it’s easy to see why it’s been voted the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards Favourite UK City. From the world-renowned modern art gallery to one of Europe's largest shopping malls there are plenty of visitor attractions to meet everyone's tastes in Newcastle / Gateshead, including the famous Angel of the North!

    All of this plus, within a short distance you could surf in the morning at Blue Flag beaches and in the afternoon be skiing up at Weardale in the Pennines, not to mention the staggeringly beautiful Northumbrian coastline, World Heritage sites of Hadrian’s Wall and Durham Cathedral and Harry Potter’s castle, aka Alnwick Castle.

    There is an expanse of greenery in the heart of the city which is bigger than Hyde Park and Hampstead Heath combined and bigger than New York’s Central Park.

    There are even have cows grazing on the town moor!

    London North East Railway offers a frequent and direct service to London Kings Cross to Scotland via Newcastle You can hop on an LNER train at London Kings Cross and be in the heart of Newcastle city centre in under three hours

    Travelling by road to Newcastle and Gateshead is hassle-free thanks to a network of major roads, including the A1 (M) which conveniently links Newcastle Gateshead to London, the South, Scotland and major routes across the country. The A69 heads west and connects Newcastle and Gateshead with historic Carlisle and Hexham as well as the Lake District and, via the M6, to the South, Wales and the West of England. Once you’re here, you can park up in one of the many well-signposted central car parks within the city.

    Newcastle International Airport provides superb links to the rest of the UK, Europe and beyond with direct flights to and from over 80 destinations. When arriving at Newcastle Airport, you will find a number of transport options to take you into Newcastle city centre, Gateshead, the Coast and the surrounding areas of Northumberland.

    Newcastle Airport is located less than 8 miles outside of Newcastle city centre and is only a 20-minute drive by car. Airport Metro Station is located just outside the airport itself; hop on regular services to Newcastle city centre which is only a 25-minute metro ride away. Getting to Gateshead from the Airport takes approximately 30 minutes by Metro providing hassle-free onward travel across the region.

  • Did you know?

    The ‘New Castle’ (which gave the town its name) was founded in 1080 by the eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert Curthose, and built using earth and timber. Between 1168 and 1178 the castle as we know it today was rebuilt in stone.​
